Alternative Historical Events Homework

1947- The end of British colonial rule in India.  Indian victory over the British divided India into two countries India and Pakistan. The two countries were established on the basis of religion; Islam and Hinduism. The largely Islamic nation Pakistan was divided into two parts: East Pakistan and West Pakistan.

1971- In 1970, Awami League (a political party from East Pakistan) wins a huge victory in the national elections in East Pakistan. The victory allowed Awami League’s leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. However, his victory angered existing Pakistani leader Yahya Khan. Consequently, Mujibur Rahman was arrested and taken to West Pakistan. Followed by, Mujibur Rahman proclaimed the independence of East Pakistan and changed its name to Bangladesh. During the War between Pakistan and Bangladesh about 10 million Bangladeshi flee to India. After 9 months, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan with the help of India.

1974- Flood hits Bangladesh. About 28,000 people died and many crops were devastated.

1988- Islam becomes the national religion. Flood hits Bangladesh. Millions were left homeless.

1998- The country is devastated by the worst floods ever.

If Bangladesh had lost the war against Pakistan, then today we wouldn’t have a country named Bangladesh. Bangladesh would have remained as East Pakistan and people would speak Urdu instead of Bangla.

Outcome 20: Literary elements in “Bounty.”

020.0910: Student analyzes the use of literary elements and techniques in George Saunders’ writing.

The narrator’s ironic and adventurous journey to get back her sister symbolizes a fugitive slave’s journey through slavery; his decision to run away, his adventurous journey; being captured and sold as a slave. For example, the social hierarchy in “Bounty,” the Normal and the Flawed point out to the social hierarchy that once existed in American land. The narrator lived in a place where flawed were treated as less important than Normal. For example, we could analyze this event asfree blacks who lived in North Eastern states such as New York were treated as inferior and they were at risk of being captured and put into slavery. Followed by, the narrator sister was captured by a Normal. Then the narrator decided to run away to get his sister back. We could analyze this event as; a free black woman was captured by a white man and was brought to the West. Then her brother took a great risk to find her. He decided to run away from his place to somewhere where he had little or no change of survival. Back to “Bounty,” during the narrator’s adventurous journey, he was captured and sold as a slave. We could analyze this event as, a fugitive black man escaped to the West to find her sister, in his journey he was captured and sold as a slave to someone who would use him for prostitution. Then fortunately he found his sister there and saw she was pregnant. Then she gave birth and he was happy to see her not living in agony. Followed by, he begged the American society to eliminate the “Slave Edict” to help this innocent and sinless child live a happy life and free him from brutality and the burden of slavery.

“Bounty,” made an allusion to “forced prostitution” or “sexual slavery” in the United States and around the world.” This kind of job already exists in American land and around the world. George Saunders satirized this kind of social immorality and heinous businesses. In many countries, frequently men and women are being captured and forced into prostitution or sexual slavery. Women are frequently trafficked from countries in South America, Asia and then they are forced into sexual slavery in America. In “Bounty,” George Saunders explains, how an innocent Flawed was captured and sold as a slave to somebody who latter forced him into sexual slavery. Even though, this kind of businesses is immoral in the eyes of God and society, but the government never have taken any comprehensive actions to stop sexual slavery in American land.

“Bounty” is an allegory for slavery and the shaping of American society. In “Bounty,” George Saunders satirized (ridiculed) the concept of Slavery by using ironic characters and characteristics such as Flawed, Glamor Divan, Victor, Slave Edict, and etc. In Bounty, George Saunders introduced a society with social hierarchy where people with flaw are considered as “subhuman trash.” They are vulnerable to hostility and have no voice against injustice. They are subject to discrimination and vulnerable to legal injustice. For instance, the narrator was accused of raping a woman though he was innocent. He was captured and sold as a slave. In American society Blacks were frequently victim of injustice. Many Black male were accused of raping white women and many of these Black men were lynched by angry white mobs. For example, Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mocking Bird shows how innocent Tom Robinson was destroyed by evil.

Quotations from “Bounty”

“There’s not a person on this earth who’s not flawed in one way or another.” P. 119

Nobody on this planet earth is perfect; everyone has some kind of imperfections. Therefore, the narrator in this story shouldn’t be a subject to discrimination because of his flaw.

“How sad that men like you exist and believe yourself strong.” P. 120

Flawed were a subject to discrimination and hatred. If everyone were hostile against you, then you wouldn’t be able to carry on.

“In the Western portion of our nation, a man like yourself may literally be purchased and enslaved.” P. 94

In a nation, when one group of people exercise absolute power and treat others as inferior, then the powerless people are helpless. In the 19th century, Black people in the Western portion of America were treated as inferior and were subject to discrimination and all kinds of brutality. However, regarding Bounty, the western portion of the country was hostile against flawed. As a flawed, the narrator was considered strange and abnormal. Flawed were very powerless that the narrator was accused of raping a girl, but he had no voice against injustice.

“Out there genetic purity is highly valued and Flaweds are generally considered subhuman   trash…” P. 89

In Bounty, the flawed are greatly abhorred by the society. The society directs the people to keep their gene pure by staying away from Flawed. The society sees flawed as less than human beings.

“If you got fifty bucks you can turn him into dog food for all I care.” P. 159

This quote refers to egoistic behavior. Because flawed weren’t considered as human beings, people had no compassion for them. For instance, during slavery the salve trader had no sympathy for blacks. They captured them and sold them to make profit. They didn’t think of what kind of harm they are doing to them. They just wanted to make profit.

“Frankly, I abhor this slavery thing. But you can’t fight it. So I do my part to treat my people like human beings.” P. 160

Your altruistic characters can influence your behaviors. Some people hated to be brutal toward others and they didn’t want to treat their slave as domestic animals. Therefore, slave owner tried to provide their salve some freedom.

“I’m not going to treat you like a slave and I don’t expect you to act like one.” P. 161

Even though the slave owner honored him some freedom and wouldn’t treat him like a slave, he is still a slave. He is not completely free. Therefore, he can’t see himself as a free bird.

“Who am I to judge? She’s here in front of me, not off suffering somewhere, not starving, not in agony, and for that I’m glad.” P. 178

The narrator was glad to see her sister living a happy life. He was glad that the burden of agony and suffering didn’t demolish her.

“I describe the way the baby finches when she passes gas… Her tiny brown eyes… I beg them to repeal the Slave Edict and Grant her full citizenship.” P. 179

The narrator doesn’t want his sister’s baby daughter to suffer in agony. He doesn’t want her to live a life of slave. Therefore, he wants to revoke the slave act and grant this innocent child her full freedom; life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

“You took my virginity and made me forget my flaw. Let me stay. I’ll tape my claws, or file them down daily. We could adopt.” P. 142

The girl who once offered him love, now she abhors him because of his flaw. He begged her that he will try to hide his flaw. He begged her to let him stay, but she accused him of raping her. Flawed didn’t have a voice and thus he had to ran away to save his life.

“Seeing someone do something that’s not patently selfish and… is like a breath of fresh air, good clean fresh air ….” P. 126

In an egoistic society people always try to be selfish and have little or no compassion to help others. However, if people in this egoistic society see someone risked his life to help save a little boy, then some would criticize him and some would call him a hero. In this nature of human beings, seeing someone doing something good for others would make the altruistic feel “a breath of fresh air” because people are tired of evilness.

“I should love me at least as much as I love you. And I don’t even really know you. I wonder what I should do, anyway?”

Sometime an egoistic would acquire him or her, why should I help others?  Should I take care of myself first or try to make someone else happy?  Why should I put myself in danger? Should I only think of me because my life is important to me? Ultimately, the egoistic would try to satisfy his or desire.

Consequences of lying

Lying is an evil characteristic, which all religions and systems of ethics warn against and which man’s innate common sense (fitrah) agrees that it is wrong. Those who possess chivalry and sound reason also say this…..
