Quotations from “Bounty”
“There’s not a person on this earth who’s not flawed in one way or another.” P. 119
Nobody on this planet earth is perfect; everyone has some kind of imperfections. Therefore, the narrator in this story shouldn’t be a subject to discrimination because of his flaw.
“How sad that men like you exist and believe yourself strong.” P. 120
Flawed were a subject to discrimination and hatred. If everyone were hostile against you, then you wouldn’t be able to carry on.
“In the Western portion of our nation, a man like yourself may literally be purchased and enslaved.” P. 94
In a nation, when one group of people exercise absolute power and treat others as inferior, then the powerless people are helpless. In the 19th century, Black people in the Western portion of America were treated as inferior and were subject to discrimination and all kinds of brutality. However, regarding Bounty, the western portion of the country was hostile against flawed. As a flawed, the narrator was considered strange and abnormal. Flawed were very powerless that the narrator was accused of raping a girl, but he had no voice against injustice.
“Out there genetic purity is highly valued and Flaweds are generally considered subhuman trash…” P. 89
In Bounty, the flawed are greatly abhorred by the society. The society directs the people to keep their gene pure by staying away from Flawed. The society sees flawed as less than human beings.
“If you got fifty bucks you can turn him into dog food for all I care.” P. 159
This quote refers to egoistic behavior. Because flawed weren’t considered as human beings, people had no compassion for them. For instance, during slavery the salve trader had no sympathy for blacks. They captured them and sold them to make profit. They didn’t think of what kind of harm they are doing to them. They just wanted to make profit.
“Frankly, I abhor this slavery thing. But you can’t fight it. So I do my part to treat my people like human beings.” P. 160
Your altruistic characters can influence your behaviors. Some people hated to be brutal toward others and they didn’t want to treat their slave as domestic animals. Therefore, slave owner tried to provide their salve some freedom.
“I’m not going to treat you like a slave and I don’t expect you to act like one.” P. 161
Even though the slave owner honored him some freedom and wouldn’t treat him like a slave, he is still a slave. He is not completely free. Therefore, he can’t see himself as a free bird.
“Who am I to judge? She’s here in front of me, not off suffering somewhere, not starving, not in agony, and for that I’m glad.” P. 178
The narrator was glad to see her sister living a happy life. He was glad that the burden of agony and suffering didn’t demolish her.
“I describe the way the baby finches when she passes gas… Her tiny brown eyes… I beg them to repeal the Slave Edict and Grant her full citizenship.” P. 179
The narrator doesn’t want his sister’s baby daughter to suffer in agony. He doesn’t want her to live a life of slave. Therefore, he wants to revoke the slave act and grant this innocent child her full freedom; life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
“You took my virginity and made me forget my flaw. Let me stay. I’ll tape my claws, or file them down daily. We could adopt.” P. 142
The girl who once offered him love, now she abhors him because of his flaw. He begged her that he will try to hide his flaw. He begged her to let him stay, but she accused him of raping her. Flawed didn’t have a voice and thus he had to ran away to save his life.
“Seeing someone do something that’s not patently selfish and… is like a breath of fresh air, good clean fresh air ….” P. 126
In an egoistic society people always try to be selfish and have little or no compassion to help others. However, if people in this egoistic society see someone risked his life to help save a little boy, then some would criticize him and some would call him a hero. In this nature of human beings, seeing someone doing something good for others would make the altruistic feel “a breath of fresh air” because people are tired of evilness.
“I should love me at least as much as I love you. And I don’t even really know you. I wonder what I should do, anyway?”
Sometime an egoistic would acquire him or her, why should I help others? Should I take care of myself first or try to make someone else happy? Why should I put myself in danger? Should I only think of me because my life is important to me? Ultimately, the egoistic would try to satisfy his or desire.
